No 775 - Medallion of Benedict III

No 775 - Medallion of Benedict III Image

Found under the front step of a house in Liverpool and obviously buried there to ensure some form of blessing for the household, this is a heavy bronze medallion depicting Pope Benedict III.

Pope Benedict III, AD 855-858.

It is a big piece measuring 40 mm across and weighing a hefty 23+ grammes.

The reverse reads TV.P.ME NAVE LIQISTI SUSCEPE CLAVEM which is short for TU PRO ME NAVEM LIQUISTI SUSCEPE CLAVEM (YOU LEFT THE SHIP FOR ME TAKE YOU THE KEY)

From the style it would date to about 1700-1750.......there were some commemorative medals struck in Rome about then showing past Popes.
