This type of sceat is still little understood. This example is only the fourth known. The others are from Tilbury, the Isle of Wight and a site near Canterbury.
The coin is known as a Saltire-standard/Double croix ancree (cf Type 51) dating to between 710 and 735 AD. The coin seems to be a more roughly executed copy than the other three known specimens. There is a lack of an inner circle on the obverse and the reverse has more irregularly-spaced trefoils of pellets.
