This unusual artefact was found by Mo’ of our company some time ago. It measures 20 mm in diameter and was used to check the weight of gold guineas minted before 1772.
One side bears the letters ‘Dw’ and ‘Gr’ with the numbers 5 & 6 below each letter signifying the weight ie. 5 pennyweights, 6 grains.
The other side reads ‘COINED BEFORE 1772’.
The original was made of bronze or brass.
