This Verica Galley silver unit is a comparatively new type, unpublished by any major catalogue and excessively rare. There is only one other exaample recorded and this is easily the better of the two. Dr John Creighton, in Coins and Power in Late Iron Age Britain (2000) illustrates the obverse of the other example and comments that the ship’s prow was the classic symbol of a naval victory, an image which multiplied in its use following Octavian’s victory at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC.
